The state government has re-assured of its determination to continue to prioritize healthcare delivery and training of health care workers, for the good of the people of the state.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services Dr. Yanmar Ortese stated this on Wednesday, 20th March, 2024 at a dinner organised by the Management of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in honour of an accreditation team from the Faculty of Family Medicine, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria at Doo Palace Hotel.

He commended the Chief Medical Director for changing the face of the hospital within just few months but lamented manpower challenge in the health sector in the state and explained that it was in a bid to tackle the issue that the Alia administration re-introduced the bond scheme for it’s medical students ; and commenced Nursing and Midwifery training at the Benue State University Makurdi.

Dr. Ortese expressed worry over the increasing cases of infectious diseases in the state in recent times, especially Lassa fever, which has claimed about 15 lives, and appealed to the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) to establish a molecular laboratory or an Infectious Disease Center in the state to manage Lassa fever cases.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Stephen Terungwa Hwande, in his remarks stated that the visit was his first accreditation since he became the Chief Medical Director in October 2023.

He assured the team of his willingness to continue to provide all that is needed for the hospital to provide good services to Benue people.

On his part, Leader of the accreditation team Dr. Fatai Olaniyan in his remarks described the hospital as one of the neatest in the country and commended the CMD for improving the quality of services and equipment in the hospital.

Highlights of the event was the decoration of members of the accreditation team in Tiv and Idoma traditional attires by the Commissioner for Health and Human Services Dr. Yanmar Ortese and cultural performance by the Benue State Arts Council Troupe.
