Our Departments
Excellence in Health Care

Accident & Emergency
The Department of Accident & Emergency is the first port of call for all Surgical, Medical and Gynaecological emergencies arriving in the hospital. It is therefore the eye of the Hospital and its image.

Surgery
The Department of Surgery is one of the major clinical departments of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital. It was created with the twin goals of (a) producing well trained surgical manpower

Internal Medicine
The department of Internal Medicine is one of the major clinical services and training departments in the hospital. It is generally acknowledged for the quality of service and training it renders.

Family Medicine
The Department of Family Medicine at BSUTH provides a range of services at outpatient and staff clinics, including services for the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and Retainership clinics. The department offers comprehensive care to patients of all ages, genders, and with various health concerns.

Paediatrics Department
The Department of Pediatrics is the main health care providing site for children in South-south Geo-political zone of Nigeria. It is also a teaching site for Residents and students in Pediatrics and Child Health and provides.

Otorhinolaryngology - ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat)
Ear, Nose and Throat surgery also known as otorhinolaryngology is a surgical specialty which deals with diseases of the ear, nose and throat and related structures of head and neck

Obstetrics and Gynaecology
The department offers gynaecological, obstetric and labour (delivery) services. The latter services are provided in a fully functional labour ward/theatre suites and optimal neonatal resuscitation facilities

Psychiatry Department
Department of Psychiatry is responsible for patient care, teaching of medical students, and resident doctors, research and developing programs to prevent mental illnesses.

Radiology
The department of Radiology attend to the imaging needs of patients who are referred from the various clinical departments of the hospital. It is a service department.

Laboratory Services

Pharmacy
Pharmaceutical Services department offers comprehensive Pharmacy services that provides high-quality patient care, efficient medication management and excellent customer service.

Dentistry Unit
The Dental unit of the hospital offers the following services to both adult and paediatric patients Restorative services which includes: Amalgam fillings, composite fillings, GIC fillings, root canal treatment, apicectomy, pulpotomy, pulpectomy. Preventive services including scaling and polishing, root planing, oral health education.
Meet the CMD
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our hospital, the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH). Our mission is to provide excellent, relevant, and affordable tertiary healthcare services to the people of Benue State, in particular, and Nigeria in general, with a conducive environment for research and training of healthcare professionals to improve the health of the people and advance health-related knowledge.

Excellence in Health Care
The Benue State University Teaching Hospital was established by George Akume's administration ( I 999-2007). However, as the end of the administration in 2007, construction work at the hospital was yet to be completed. It was H.E. Governor Gabriel Suswam's administration that award contract for the completion of construction work to Messrs Danta and Sawoe and also appointed the maiden Board of Management which he inaugurated on 27th August, 2008. The hospital was officially commissioned on the 9' of March, 20 I 2, by the then President, H.E. Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR. The hospital is a 450+ bed facility with 18 Clinical departments with specialist services in various fields, including endoscopy, haemodialysis, cardio-thoracic surgery, hip & knee replacement, paediatric surgeries and neurosurgeries etc. It has received full accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to train medical students and has graduated several sets of medical doctors. The hospital also offers training for house officers and continuing professional development programs for medical doctors. At present, the facility has a staff strength of over 1,700+ including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists. It has modern equipment, including CT scanner, mammography machine, ultrasound machines, MRI and 6 functional theatres with a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD).

PRESIDENT TINUBU VISITS BSUTH, CONDEMNS YELWATA ATTACK.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Wednesday, 18th June, 2025, paid a visit to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, as part of his official tour following the gruesome attack on the Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area by suspected Fulani terrorists. Accompanied by the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and other top dignitaries from across the country, President Tinubu was received by the Chief Medical Director of teaching hospital, Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande.

TOR TIV, OTHERS VISIT YELWATA ATTACK VICTIMS, DONATE N1 MILLION
His Royal Majesty, Professor James Iorzua Ayatse, the Tor Tiv V, on Thursday, 19th June 2025, visited victims of the Yelwata attack receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi and donated one million naira to support their treatment and recovery. The visit aimed to console survivors of the deadly attack, which left over 200 people dead, many injured, and hundreds displaced. The Tor Tiv, visibly moved, was led around the hospital wards by the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Stephen Terungwa Hwande, to interact with victims.

BSUTH COMMENDS BENUE GOVT, SEMA, TOR TIV, SUSWAM FOR YELWATA SUPPORT
The Management of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital Makurdi, led by Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, has appreciated the Benue State Government and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for promptly supporting victims of the recent Fulani herdsmen attack in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area. BSUTH thanked the State Emergency Management Agency for taking responsibility for the victims’ medical bills and providing feeding support. The intervention, according to the CMD, has greatly reduced the hospital’s burden and aided the recovery of those affected by the tragic incident.

BSUTH VIP SMART CLINIC TO COMMENCE OPERATIONS JUNE 23
The Chief Medical Director of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, has announced that the hospital’s VIP Smart Clinic will commence clinical operations on Monday, 23rd June, 2025. Dr. Hwande made the announcement during an inspection tour of the facility. He expressed satisfaction with the quality and speed of work and directed the immediate commencement of a test-run to assess the clinic’s operational readiness.
